| Growth & Development Leadership Build Momentum Business and Sales Nurses Eat Their Young Qualifying Nurses As High Performance Teams: The Dichotomy Between High Performance And High Functioning Over the years I’ve worked with hundreds of nurses to improve performance, develop interpersonal skills, respond more accountability and foster team work. I have been amazed at the gap between what they know and how they relate. These men and women are knowledge banks and the longer they are in your system the more valuable their corporate knowledge becomes. Professionally, they are required to know their stuff and their place and be available whenever they are needed, personal life or not! From the patients’ point of view, certainly true for me when I was a patient, nurses are expected to care regardless what’s going on in their lives, how they feel and no matter how they are treated! No wonder they sometimes burst at the seams! What can you expect? 2 and 4 year education programs even with the 1 year practicum are jam packed with technical information they must know. There isn’t much time for leadership courses and once hired, on the job training is like drinking water from a fire hose. No wonder such a high percentage of nurses leave the profession in the first year. What a waste of precious time, devotion, education and potential…not to mention costs. In interviews with 105 nurses they said what draws them to the profession, what they wish they’d known and their advice for those considering the field. They shared their childhood inspirations, the rock solid knowledge of their calling, a few stories of adult mentors and guides and over 25% of them said some version of nurses eat their young. Nurses Eat Their Young! Many nurses have an inkling of what this is about and are helpful to new nurses taking responsibility for teaching, bolstering and quarterbacking. Others refute it whole heartedly and see it as contrary to their experience and even bad press for the profession. Some are convinced a forgotten speaker way back when used the term to describe being let down and held to too high of a responsibility without the proper level of training and support. They survived and now some of them believe training isn’t complete unless the new kids on the block repeat the same experience. What is being called forth?
